The author of this week's story, "Chapter Two," talks with the magazine's
fiction editor, Deborah Treisman.

Your story, "Chapter Two," is told through the voice of a character who is
telling stories of her own at A.A. meetings. Why did you choose that kind of
layered storytelling for this particular piece?

_

I had the details of Bergeron Love as a character in my mind, yet I had a
difficult time figuring out how to capture the full range of her personality
in a short-story format. To expedite this, I decided to give my own problem--
summing up a character--to a fictional being. Now the problem is Hil's. And
she has a ready-made venue for storytelling, or trying, anyway.

What is your favorite movie quote?

I like this one. Hopefully, I don't need to say the movie:

William Wallace: Sons of Scotland! I am William Wallace.

Second Soldier: William Wallace is seven feet tall!

William Wallace: Yes, I've heard. Kills men by the hundreds. And if HE were here, he'd consume the English with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his ****.

I AM William Wallace! And I see a whole army of my country men, here, in defiance of tyranny. You've come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What will you do with that freedom? Will you fight?
